What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

Practical outfit ideas and color schemes for fall family photos in New England — from a natural-light photographer in Connecticut's Quiet Corner.

Fall is the season most families picture when they think of outdoor photos: warm leaves, low golden light and cool evenings. What you wear makes a bigger difference than almost anything else you can control. The good news is that it doesn't take a new wardrobe. It takes a little planning, a simple color story and clothes everyone can actually move in.

Here's what photographs well in New England in the fall, from someone who shoots outdoors in natural light all season.

Start with a color story, not matching outfits

Matching shirts tend to flatten a family photo. Instead, pick two or three colors that sit well together and let each person wear a mix of them. Coordinated looks natural; identical looks staged.

A simple way to start: choose one anchor color (often the parent's outfit), then build everyone else around it with lighter and darker shades. Lay the outfits out together on a bed before the session. If anything jumps out at you, it will jump out in the photos too.

Fall color schemes that work outdoors

  • Rust, cream and denim: warm, classic and easy to pull from most closets
  • Olive, camel and ivory: earthy tones that sit naturally against fall foliage
  • Burgundy, blush and soft gray: a little richer, great for later in the season
  • Mustard, navy and oatmeal: a pop of warmth balanced by a deep neutral
  • All soft neutrals (cream, tan, taupe): timeless, and it lets the scenery do the work

Colors and patterns to use carefully

Bright neon colors reflect onto skin and pull attention away from faces. Pure black can lose detail in shade, and pure bright white can glow in direct sun, so soft versions of both (charcoal, ivory) usually photograph better. Small busy patterns and large logos or graphics are distracting. If you love pattern, keep it to one person, at a larger scale, in colors that already appear in the rest of the family's outfits.

Texture is your best friend in the fall

Fall clothing gives you something summer doesn't: texture. Chunky knits, corduroy, flannel, suede, wool and linen-blends all add depth in natural light. A plain outfit in a textured fabric often looks richer on camera than a busy outfit in a flat one. Layers help too. A cardigan, jacket or scarf gives you two looks in one session and keeps little ones warm as the light drops.

Dress for the weather and the ground

New England fall evenings cool off fast once the sun gets low, which is exactly when the light is best. Bring a warm layer for everyone, even if it's mild when you arrive. Think about the ground as well. Outdoor locations can mean grass, leaves, uneven paths or damp fields, so choose shoes you can walk in. Boots and clean sneakers work well; very high heels and brand-new shoes usually don't.

Kids: comfort first

Kids who are comfortable are kids who smile. Avoid anything itchy, stiff or brand new that they haven't worn before. Let them pick one item they love (a favorite hat, a sweater, a pair of boots) and build around it. Bring a backup outfit and wipes for the little ones, and a snack that won't stain.

Bringing the dog?

If your dog is joining, a simple leather or neutral collar looks better on camera than a bright one. A matching-tone bandana or a soft scarf can tie them into the family's color story. Bring a leash, treats and water, and plan on the first few minutes being about getting the dog settled.

Quick checklist for the day

  • Outfits laid out together the night before
  • A warm layer for everyone
  • Comfortable shoes for outdoor ground
  • Lint roller, hair ties, wipes and a small snack
  • A backup outfit for young kids
  • Phones on silent and in a pocket

The most important thing

The outfits matter, but how you feel matters more. Wear things that feel like you, give yourself time to arrive unhurried, and let the session be about being together. That's what shows up in the photos you'll keep.
